LOCATION
Antalya is one of the seaside resorts constituting the fascinating Turkish Riviera. It is situated on the Mediterranean coast in the southern part of Antalya Province. The territory of the city consists of narrow costal plains, natural bays and peninsulas of breath-taking beauty. The regional fauna allows hunting tours. As for the flora, it is of staggering variety - here you will see exotic species you have only heard of, such as: oleander, wild strawberries, sandalwood, strawberry trees, myrtle, chinaberry trees, chaste trees, carob trees; oriental plane, wild pear, olive and linden trees.
TIME TO VISIT
The weather is mild and tourists can be found in Antalya all the year round, regardless to seasons. The sun just can't help shining here and the winter season brings the yearly rainfall. The cold winds from the north are held back by the mountains surrounding the city, so you can enjoy the warmth of the water in the hot summer and even in the rainy winter, for the water temperature never goes below 15°C. The air temperature is rather high in July and August. Even when the temperature reaches 45°C, the northeasterly winds and the sea breeze, swaying the palm-trees, are a heavenly relief from the fiery sunrays. If the wind is not enough and you need fresh air - go higher. The highest point of the Taurus Mountains is Akdag (3025 metres), so you can even go skiing in Antalya?
POPULATION
The population of the capital city of the Antalya Province is 714,000. This number increases to two million people in summer due to the tourists both from abroad and Turkey itself. The official language is Turkish, but you will hear people speaking Kurdish, Armenian and Aramaic. In the tourist resorts English and German are also spoken.
DISTRICTS
Turkey is divided into 91 provinces, called vilayet' and governed by a vali'. The provinces on their turn are divided into districts (923). Antalya comprises one greater city and three district municipalities. Current mayor is Menderes Türel. The Antalya Province grows extremely fast - the population growth rate is 4.17% per year. The location of the province accounts for the great number of tourists, which leads to considerable development and betterment of all the service sectors on the coast. The coastal districts are: Antalya, Gazipaşa, Alanya, Manavgat, Serik, Kemer, Kumluca, Finike, Kale and Kaş. The inner plateau districts; Gündogmuş, Akseki, Ibradi, Korkuteli and Elmali.
- Serik district - 22 km of coastline. The district attracts 30 million visitors every year. Here is the town of Belek that has plenty of 5 star hotels. Places to see: Sillion and Aspendos ruins, the cave of Zeytinlitas.
- Kemer - a harmonious combination of sea, forest, and mountains. Excellent infrastructure. A lot of clubs, bars, restaurants. The predominant currency is Euro due to the great number of European tourists.
