LOCATION
Xi'an takes a central position not only on Chinese history but also on its geography map. Surrounded by the Qinling mountain range to the south, the Huashan mountains to the east and the Taibai mountains to the west the city lies near the River Wei in the Guanzhong Plain. Thanks to this strategic economic and geographical position Xi'an has become one of the largest and most important industrial, educational and cultural centres in China.

TIME TO VISIT
Xi'an enjoys a mild, continental monsoon climate with four distinctive seasons so it is possible to pleasurably visit it at any time of the year. January is the coldest month there, with an average temperature of 0 degrees C and the hottest time of the year is June with an average of 26 degrees C. So in order to avoid those weather extremes, bear in mind that spring and autumn are considered favourite times to go sightseeing in Xi'an .

POPULATION
The number of registered inhabitants of the city is estimated at around 8 million people with the majority of its residents being Han Chinese. There is a considerable number of ethnic minorities in Xi'an , including Muslim Hui people. And similarly to most major Chinese cities, many immigrant workers come to Xi'an from the rural areas every year. The local dialect is close to the Classical Chinese language and is called Shaanxi Hua.

The city of Xi'an is composed of 9 districts and 4 outlying counties. The city wall surrounds the central part of the city, where most commercial and pedestrian streets are located.


SIGHTS & ATTRACTIONS
Xi'an 's prominent place in history has contributed to the great number of ancient remains there. It has been estimated that there are almost 3000 registered sites in the city and its local areas and more than 30 of them are national monuments. You can find pieces of almost all Chinese history there and should most certainly feed your eyes with at least some of them.
AIRPORT
Since situated in the centre of the country, Xi'an plays the important role of being a connection point between western and eastern parts of China. That is why the city's International Airport is considered the fourth busiest destination for travelers as well as the one with most international connecting flights in Western China.
LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
Xi'an's public transport is well arranged, offering more than 200 bus routes. The city also has several railway stations that connect Xi'an to various domestic destinations. The subway is still under construction and it is planned to be completed in the year 2009.
HISTORY
Xi'an is considered one of the cradles of Chinese civilization and a birthplace of humanity. This region was found to be the home of a 11-million-years-old Lantian man whose fossils were discovered there. Six thousand years ago during the Neolithic period Chinese ancestors lived on farming and hunting in the area. Xi'an has also put its signature on the world's history by being a capital city of thirteen Chinese dynasties beginning in the 11th century BC: from the Zhou Dynasty, a society based on slavery, to the imperial times of the Tang emperor. A part of the old Silk Road and the first metropolitan city in the world, Xi'an enjoys the respect of being a symbol of ancient and modern oriental civilization that has fascinated tourists for a long time now.
