LOCATION
31°10'N 121°28'E The largest city in China is situated along the Yangtze River, which separates it to two districts. This is one of the busiest cities and a real industrial capital of China, so it iseasy to get there.
TIME TO VISIT
The city has hot spring and cold winter.That is why the best time to visit Shanghai is in spring or autumn. The best time for traveling is from March to May when the conditions are quite pleasant. Avoid to travel during the mid-June to the early July, because this is the rainy period in Shanghai.
POPULATION
The population of Shanghai is not easy to gauge. There is a constant floating people or not registered ones. Some projections predict Shanghai's population will rise to 23 million in less than 10 years.
DISTRICTS
Shanghai consists of two basic areas - Pu Xi (Western Town) and Pu Dong (Eastern Town) which face each other across the river. The forst one district is the old Shanghai and the eastern town is named the new Shanghai. The majority of the population lies in the western town.
SIGHTS & ATTRACTIONS
Being such a big city, Shanghai hides many atractions not only in the downtown. The contemporary Shanghai has several places of interest including sightseeing, shopping and eating.
- The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is a symbol of Shaghai. The 468 meter high construction is the tallest television tower in Asia and the third highest in the world. From the top you could see a beautiful panorama of the city.
- Yuyuan Garden is a miracle of peace and comfort. It is the most famous garden in Shanghai, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Pan Yunduan has built it firstly as a private garden to please his parents. The construction lasted almost 20 years. The garden has six parts, each with its own style.
- Shanghai Museum houses not only a large bronze mirror of the Han Dynasty, but also 120,000 precious art items like paintings, bronzes, pottery and calligraphies. There are many distinct collections.
- The Bund is a waterfront which is a well-know place to see in Shanghai, which can not be missed. The architecture of the buildings date from the 20th century. It is the right place for promenades along the river, enjoying the air and the atmosphere.
- The Jade Buddha Temple is active Budhist monastery and a famous tourist attraction. It contains two Budha statues made of jade and several other Budhas in other different aspects.
- The uforgettable water town of Zhujiajiao and Qibaoancient town plunge the immagination in another world, where ancient house meet the river shores. The river runs among the houses making marvelous view with local flavor for the visitor.
AIRPORT
Shanghai has two airports the most comfortable way is by air.
- Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport is named after the Pudong district of Shanghai, situtated in the eastern part of the city. It forms the main gateway into China, with over 12 million passengers annually. LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
- The net of Metro is fast-growing.Presently it has 5 lines (4 other lines are under construction). The fares range from Y2 to Y9 depending on distance
- Taxiis affordable (only 11 yuan for the first 3 km) and saves you a lot of time. The chepaest taxis are turquoise taxis operated by Dazhong. Watch out for red taxis, which are based in small companies and are quite expensive; however bright red taxis are good.
- Busesare the cheapest option. There are as many as 1000 lines of buses in Shanghai, including suburban buses.
- Bikeshave been extremely popular there, but increasing traffic makes cycling a bit dangerous. However there are quite many cycling lanes.
- There are different companiesoffering sightseeing buses with various routes, which is a very convenient way of transportation for the tourists.
HISTORY
Once, Shanghai was a seaside fishing port and then, the gradual development led to its todays's being of multi-cultural metropolis. The city passed through the era of growing cotton. After the trading with Americans, British and French the last were allowed to live in Shaghai. That is why it become influenced by foreign cultures before the comunism. Because of the opium wars, influenced by the foreigners, the government took all the power. It allowed the advances to invade the city after the Culture revolution and the succes of the city started
